After the events of 9/11, rebuilding the World Trade Center became one of the most complex construction projects in modern history.
But as One World Trade Center began to rise, a very real, very practical problem emerged: How do you feed hundreds of workers when the jobsite is hundreds of feet in the air? Workers had just a 30-minute lunch break. Traveling to ground level could take 45 minutes or more each way—making it nearly impossible to leave the site. The Solution: A Shipping Container… Subway? The answer came in the form of an unexpected but brilliant innovation: A fully operational Subway restaurant—built inside shipping containers and lifted alongside the tower as it grew.
