Nuclear Power... Delivered

Imagine a disaster relief zone, up and running on real electricity days after the grid goes down, instead of weeks. A remote town that has never had reliable power, connected without a single new transmission line. A military installation with energy independence built in from day one. A municipality or a university running a portion of its own grid, insulated from regional outages. A data center — one of the fastest-growing consumers of electricity in the country — powered without adding new water demand to an already strained supply, right as data center growth and grid capacity are colliding in almost every headline about the future of energy.

Now imagine all of that, delivered inside a standard steel shipping container.

The list of things a container can become keeps getting longer, and stranger, in the best way. The latest addition: a factory-built nuclear reactor. A California company called Radiant is putting up a production facility in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, designed to build up to 50 sealed reactors a year and ship them out complete — the way an appliance or a jet engine comes off an assembly line, rather than getting built one-of-a-kind on-site, which is how every nuclear reactor on the American grid has been built until now.

The reactor coming off that line is called Kaleidos — a compact, transportable unit producing about 1 megawatt of electricity from a 3-megawatt thermal core. It runs on TRISO fuel, small ceramic-coated uranium particles built to withstand extreme heat, and uses no water anywhere in its cooling system, relying instead on helium gas and simple air cooling. The whole unit is designed to ship inside a standard container and arrive ready to connect.

This isn't just a concept on a drawing board, either. Radiant has already signed a preorder agreement with data center operator Equinix for 20 of these units, and a separate agreement to deliver a first-of-its-kind reactor to a U.S. Air Force base by 2028 — the first agreement of its kind to bring a mass-manufactured microreactor onto a military installation. The regulatory side is moving just as fast: in May, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission formally accepted Radiant's license application for the Oak Ridge factory and agreed to review it on an accelerated eight-month schedule, targeting a decision by December 18, 2026 — about 55% faster than the standard review timeline. If that holds, the U.S. could enter 2027 with the world's first licensed factory built specifically to mass-produce nuclear reactors.

Multiply a single container by fifty a year, then by however many years a factory like this runs, and the reach of the idea stops feeling like a novelty and starts feeling like real infrastructure.
