The Ports of Indiana-Burns Harbor adds rail capacity, eyes container traffic

The Ports of Indiana-Burns Harbor is making significant strides to boost its capacity and economic impact. A $25 million investment has led to the construction of two new railyards and the port's first new dock in 20 years. These developments increase rail capacity for 250 railcars and facilitate larger ocean vessels for bulk shipments. Additionally, the port is exploring container traffic, with plans for an international container hub, opening in 2026, to enhance trade partnerships and provide supply chain alternatives.

This ambitious project is set to elevate the port’s role in global trade, particularly for Indiana businesses and farmers. Collaborations with global partners, including the Port of Antwerp-Bruges, are underway to develop new container traffic services. With a focus on sustainability and supply chain efficiency, the Indiana port positions itself as a key player in offering all-water container service between Europe and Chicago, creating valuable alternatives to East Coast ports and the Chicago rail ramps.
